New York Zouave Soldier

new york zouave soldier

t'was a morning in july, i was walking to virginia
when i heard a battle cry, from the mountains over head
when i looked up in the sky, saw a new york zouave soldier
oh he looked at me right fearlessly and said

chorus:
will you stand in the band, like a true zouave man
will you go and fight the forces of the foe
will you march with sedgewick, to fight the southern prick
for tonight we go to fight old johnston, joe

said i to that zouave boy, won't you take me to your colonel
would be my pride and joy, for to march with you today
for my father died down south and my son in gettysburgh
and to the noble colonel i did say,

chorus:
I will stand...

as we marched back again, in the shadow of the evening
with our banners flying high, but our hearts felt poor and sad
for we went  back to our homes, 'cause the cruel war was over
oh we wish the glorious days would all come back
